A Mouth Guard is an important part of protecting your mouth from a disastrous trauma. Especially important are the young children still with their first set of teeth. Any trauma to the mouth could cause irreversible damage to the teeth that have not yet had time to surface.

So if you haven’t used a mouth guard and you, unfortunately, have damage or trauma to your mouth. then their usually only leaves one option to correct the problem. Dental work was done by a dentist. A dentist is an important part of our medical care when it comes with a well scheduled and planned dental care.

My whole life I’ve had problems with my teeth. A family tradition that I sadly inherited. The day that I hated the most and tried so hard to avoid was my trip to the only doctor I hated. The DENTIST!
Except, a dentist is very important to the overall health and your well being. They are usually the first one that will diagnose a case of mouth cancer when it’s still in its early stage. Because it is caught in the early stage, it is still treatable. A dentist can also detect other conditions like neurological conditions or disorders that show up in the jaw. They can also be depending on the condition of your gums and teeth reduce the risk of stroke. These conditions can be caught early by an experienced and trained dentist.

The education for a dentist is long and intense. Even though some classes maybe different  the prerequisite are usually the same.

Here is an example of the classes:

All dental schools require the following courses:

  • Biology with Lab
  • Inorganic Chemistry with Lab
  • Organic Chemistry with Lab
  • Physics with Lab
  • Most require that you take a semester of English (usually writing-based)

Some also require the courses below, while others simply suggest them as beneficial:

  • Anatomy
  • Biochemistry
  • Psychology
  • Mathematics

Most dental schools also note that the following courses can be advantageous:

  • Business
  • A Foreign Language
  • Humanities or Social Science Courses

This is just a small part of the education that school of dentistry demands. So when you look at your dentist try to remember the vast amount of education and expertise. The dentist is there not only to fix your smile but to make your quality of life better.

A dentist is important but they don’t come cheap. So It is so important to protect one’s mouth. Use a mouth guard and avoid seeing a dentist due to trauma received while playing sports.

French Canadian Tourtiere

French Canadian Tourtiere

French Canadian Tourtiere is a popular dish in Quebec, Canada. I remember when I was a child we would go to my French grandparents for the holidays and we would have a huge table of holiday munchies. It was impossible not to gorge yourself with this holiday meal. My favorite dish was the Tourtiere (Meat Pie). So here is the recipe for it, enjoy. Let me know what you think of it.

The French Canadian Tourtiere

1 pound lean ground pork

1/2 pound lean ground beef

1 onion, diced

1/2 cup water

1 clove garlic, minced

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1/2 teaspoon dried thyme crushed

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

1/4 teaspoon ground sage

1 recipe pastry for a 9-inch double crust pie

Add all ingredients to list

In a saucepan, combine pork, beef, onion, garlic, water, salt, thyme, sage, black pepper, and cloves. Cook over medium heat until mixture boils; stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to low and simmer until meat is cooked, about 5 minutes. Allow cooling to room temperature.

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).Spoon the meat mixture into the pie crust. Place top crust on top of the pie and pinch edges to seal. Cut slits in top crust so steam can escape.

Cover edges of pie with strips of aluminum foil.

Ready in Two Hours

Bake in preheated oven for 20 minutes; remove foil and return to oven. Bake for an additional 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool 10 minutes before slicing.

This French Canadian Tourtiere (Meat Pie dish) will quickly become a favorite! For me, it has to be served with catsup (ketchup). I know, I know, to each his own.

What Can I say? You can take a Canadian out of Canada, but you can’t take Canada out of the Canadian.
